Injuries from Safety Gates

There were 1,900 gate related injuries requiring emergency room care in 2009.  Older accordion style gates with diamond shape openings are  a main culprit because they can entrap a baby’s head, hand or arm.  It is better to use a gate with vertical bars.

It is very important to use the right gate at the right location.  Using a pressure mounted gate at the top of a stair is inadequate.  A screw-in hardware mounted gate is much safer at a stair.

You also have to install the gate in a proper manner, by securely attaching it to the wall with screws that reach the underlying wall stud, or by using hollow wall anchors. Follow all manufacturer instructions when installing.

It is also good to be mindful of the small plastic parts on a gate that may break over time. Small pieces could be a choking hazard, and the gate may not work properly if a part is broken. It is a good idea to monitor product recalls in case your gate is recalled for safety reasons.

Pressure Gate Wall Saver

The Pressure Gate Wall Saver is a new accessory for most pressurized baby safety gates.  It is a round 4″ diameter disc which goes between the gate pressure pad and the wall.  It increases the wall area under pressure making it less likely to damage the wall.  It’s rubber backing makes it harder to dislodge.  It’s thickness can sometimes also eliminate the need for a gate extension, and helps compensate for a baseboard at the bottom of a gate.  It is made by small safety manufacturer and is not widely available.  We have a two pack for $9.75.

 

New Baby Gate Mounting Kits

There are 2 new Gate Mounting products on the market that solve various issues with installing a baby gate at a stairway.

The first the KidCo K12 Hole Free Gate Installation Kit is cleverly designed to fit on the wood banister posts that are often at the top or bottom of stairways. It fits onto round or square posts and allows you to install a baby gate without drilling into the decorative banister post. It has adjustable clamps, a wood strip and all the hardware needed to install a gate.
