There were 1,900 gate related injuries requiring emergency room care in 2009. Older accordion style gates with diamond shape openings are a main culprit because they can entrap a baby’s head, hand or arm. It is better to use a gate with vertical bars.
It is very important to use the right gate at the right location. Using a pressure mounted gate at the top of a stair is inadequate. A screw-in hardware mounted gate is much safer at a stair.

You also have to install the gate in a proper manner, by securely attaching it to the wall with screws that reach the underlying wall stud, or by using hollow wall anchors. Follow all manufacturer instructions when installing.
It is also good to be mindful of the small plastic parts on a gate that may break over time. Small pieces could be a choking hazard, and the gate may not work properly if a part is broken. It is a good idea to monitor product recalls in case your gate is recalled for safety reasons.
Kidsafe has put together a guide to help you choose the right gate. Guide Link

Baby Gates, pressure gate, pressure gate wall saver, wall saver
The Pressure Gate Wall Saver is a new accessory for most pressurized baby safety gates. It is a round 4″ diameter disc which goes between the gate pressure pad and the wall. It increases the wall area under pressure making it less likely to damage the wall. It’s rubber backing makes it harder to dislodge. It’s thickness can sometimes also eliminate the need for a gate extension, and helps compensate for a baseboard at the bottom of a gate. It is made by small safety manufacturer and is not widely available. We have a two pack for $9.75.

It is well designed and made and will last.
The Extra Tall Center Gateway stands at 42 inches and is the tallest pressure baby gate on the market. It installs quickly without tools or hardware, leaving no holes to damage walls or woodwork. Constructed of strong tubular steel, the U-shaped frame remains firmly installed while the center walk-through door opens in either direction. At 42” tall it’s great for the safety of children and confinement of large dogs while also helping owners prevent bad habits like jumping and climbing. There are a lot of Baby Gates on the market from a multitude of different manufacturers. If you are shopping for one, it may be confusing sorting out which company offers the best quality gates. The simple answer is KidCo. They offer the highest quality, best rated, and largest selection of baby gates and extensions in the industry.
KidCo offers pressure gates, walk-thru gates, stairway gates, fireplace gates, play dens, configurable gates, and extra wide gates in an array of sizes and finishes. Most of their gates are made from sturdy metal with a choice of color, but they also offer finished wood gates for various models. All of their gates are adjustable and have optional extensions to custom fit the gate to the opening size.
KidCo gates are a little more expensive than most of the competition, but they are made better and are more durable. They are simply a better value. There are some good gates from other manufacturers but they can’t match the breadth and completeness of the KidCo line of baby gates.
